Black Gram Vada Recipe – Fried Vegan Bread

A delicious vegan snack! A little tricky to make – so follow the directions well! Feel free to leave a comment or email with any questions!
Ingredients:
1 cup black gram
¼ cup channa dal
2 teaspoons rice flour
2 green chilies
3 tablespoons of dry chopped coconut
few curry leaves
1 tablespoon cilantro leaves chopped (optional)
1 inch ginger finely chopped
Salt to taste
Oil to fry
Directions:

Rinse and soak black gram in 3 cups of water for 2-3 hours

Drain the water from soaked black gram

Grind black gram and channa dal together to smooth paste using very little water (Batter should be thick contain little water. The right consistency is key!)

Mix in coconut, cilantro (optional), green chili, and ginger to the batter

Add 2-3 teaspoons of rice flour

Using a frying pan, heat the oil to medium

Using wet hands, scoop 3 inch size batter into hand

Make hole in the center and slide it into the hot oil

The vada should float on top of oil (If oil is too hot, vadas will not cook evenly)

Continue frying on both sides until a golden brown color is attained

Best served with chutney or sambar!
