Black Gram Dal (Soup) – Vegan

Below is the recipe for a delicious & healthy Black Gram soup!


1 cup black gram dal
1 large onion finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped
1 cinnamon stick (break into pieces)
1/2 teaspoon garlic
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon each cumin
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 bay leaf
4 black pepper cloves 3 tablespoons butter (or oil)
salt to taste
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
4 green chillies finely chopped (optional)



  1. Rinse dal
  2. Bring to a boil in 2 cups water
  3. Mash very lightly using a spoon
  4. Heat half the butter in saucepan
  5. Add mustard seeds and seasoning
  6. Add ginger and garlic, fry ingredients
  7. Add onions. Fry till light brown
  8. Add tomatoes and green chillies. Fry for 2-3 minutes
  9. Add dal, bring to boil
  10. Add turmeric, salt, sugar and lemon juice
  11. Stir & enjoy!
